Low Back Pain and Sciatica
Low back pain (LBP) and sciatica account for more than 70% of the patients we see in clinical practice. It is a common problem and it is believed 90% of people will have LBP and/or sciatica during their lifetime. Much of the time LBP and sciatica is directed linked to the sacroilliac joints which separate the pelvis and spine. If there is dysfunction with these joints, compensatory movement occurs in the lower back and can put pressure on the nerves which can send pain into the legs, groin and/or feet. This is not the only reason for LBP and bulging discs, osteoarthritis and muscular strains amongst others can all cause pain. We take a full medical history and complete a comprehensive physical examination to determine the cause of your pain and identify the best course of action to get you back to full health.
Neck pain is often associated with office workers and people who spend a lot of time driving, but it is becoming an increasing problem in teens and is often referred to as ‘text neck’ because the amount of time young people spend using their phones which puts significant pressure onto their neck and can cause imbalance in the musculature, dysfunction in the joints of the cervical spine and ultimately pain. Dysfunction in the neck can also cause pain or altered sensation in the arms, hands and face. Gentle manipulation or ‘activator’ treatment is safe and effective for reducing pain and simple exercises and ergonomic advice (posture and activity related positions) are often prescribed to re-balance the neck musculature and reduce the chance of re-occurrence.
Injuries occur because of additional strain being placed on localised tissue. This could be because of ‘going over’ on an ankle playing badminton, swinging a little too hard playing golf or a repetitive strain during your favourite activity . Whatever the cause, some injuries become persistent and remain painful for long after the actual injury. These injuries can be treated with a range of soft tissue techniques such as massage, active release, PIR/PNF, ultrasound, interferential, kinesio taping and manipulation.
Arthritis is often thought of as a problem which is age related and as such something we have to put up with. While Arthritis can be age related the pain associated with it can be managed and reduced without the need for drugs or surgery. Long term drug use has its own side effects and while sometimes it is necessary, why not try a natural and effective alternative? Chiropractic care improves movement and reduces pain associated with arthritic conditions and gentle exercises are encouraged to rebuild strength and reduce the risks of injury.
Pregnancy and Paediatrics
Pregnancy related pain such as pelvic girdle pain and SPD can be effectively treated with gentle chiropractic techniques which are safe to use during pregnancy. Pain is usually reduced almost immediately and we can maintain your physical health during the rest of your pregnancy to ensure your pregnancy is as pain free as possible. It has also been shown by a study completed by midwives that regular chiropractic care during pregnancy can reduce the need for pain relief and interventions during labour as well as shorten the labour period.
Babies and children can be treated with gentle chiropractic techniques to reduce everyday stress placed on their body through everyday occurrences such as falls, bumps and scrapes. Babies and children are often brought into the clinic because of problems latching on or difficulties in breast feeding, excessive crying often thought to be colic, delayed physical milestones such as walking or crawling, growing pains, recurrent ear infections, headaches and tummy aches.
Complex conditions such as Fibromyalgia, CFS and MS
Pain associated with chronic conditions can be treated by chiropractic and whilst we may not be able to cure the disease itself, the symptoms are often reduced with chiropractic care along with nutritional and supplement advice. We also work with several other health professions including acupuncture, homeopathy and podiatrists to offer a holistic approach to your specific condition. Further to this we know how beneficial exercise is in many of these conditions and we offer a full rehabilitation package to get you back to full strength and fitness.
